Becoming Semi-Mobile/Thoughts on Raising Kids

After spending much of the week frustrated because she couldn't quite get all of her limbs to cooperate, Harper finally rolled over last Thursday night from her stomach to her back! She's still working on rolling from her back to her stomach, but I'm sure it won't be much longer. Unfortunately my memory card was full so we didn't get any pictures, but at least we got to see it in person! After it happened I think it scared her so she was a bit upset, but progress was made! It's amazing to watch her trying so hard to figure out how to make it happen.

She was 3 months old yesterday! I can't believe it. Stephen and I broke out in our usual chorus of "Happy Birthday," which we decided could become confusing when she starts learning words if she thinks we celebrate her birthday every month. But she likes it; we even got a smile after singing, so I think we'll keep doing it for a while anway. :)

Stephen and I were talking about how incredible it is to think that she came here practically knowing nothing and over the next several years she is going to be learning most everything from us! I don't know if it's more an incredible thought or just incredibly scary!

On Saturday I had the opportunity to attend our ladies' retreat at Pine Grove Baptist Church. One of the speakers for the day was my lovely cousin, Meagan Sloan. Many of you reading this already know what a special young lady she is. She truly has a heart for others and an even bigger heart for God. She's unbelievably smart and has a strong work ethic. And to top it all off, she's beautiful. You can look for her to do some big things in the future, I'm sure of it! (And her sister, Chloe, is just as awesome!) As she was talking I was holding Harper, and I couldn't help but wonder how Meagan turned out so great?!?! Now she has terrific parents, no doubt, but I was sitting there thinking "what all do I have to get right in order for Harper to turn into such a remarkable individual?" It's overwhelming to think that all of the decisions that I make as a parent are going to positively or negatively impact my child.

But it is comforting to know that it isn't all up to me. I wouldn't expect that Meagan's parents take all the credit for the way that she has turned out. I'm sure they would acknowledge what I am realizing as I observe other peoples' kids: God plays a bigger role than we could ever imagine in this process. I know there will be things down the road that will be out of our control, but Harper will always be in the hands of the one who is in control and I'm so thankful for that! So for now, I just want to do the best that I can do and trust that God will do the rest. I'm going to cover that sweet girl in prayer, and I believe that she will grow into the person that he wants her to be!

Back to Meagan, she is going on a mission trip to Guatemala next week so please keep her in your prayers. She is also running in the Nashville Country Music Half Marathon on April 30th with Team 413. She needs to raise $500 by then. You can go to http://www.active.com/donate/team413/meagansloan to donate. All donations are tax deductible and it's for a great cause! You can also visit http://www.team413.org/ to read more about the organization that she is supporting. Good luck Meagan!

Em, my mom told me about your blog so I had to come check it out. Little did I know you were writing about me!
You are too sweet. My parents definitely played a big role in my life because they were always consistent. But remember, no one can put the desire to follow God in someone's heart besides God himself :)
Thanks for the shout-out about the half-marathon too! I love you!!
